Do you support this bill? I Don’t.

11.16.11, Congress holds hearings on the first American Internet censorship system. If it passes, the Internet and free speech will never be the same. [american censorship]

On Wednesday Jan. 18th thousands of sites will go dark to protest SOPA & PIPA, two US bills racing through Congress that threaten prosperity, online security, and freedom of expression.

SOPA – H.R.3261 – Stop Online Piracy Act

“To promote prosperity, creativity, entrepreneurship, and innovation by combating the theft of U.S. property, and for other purposes.”

PIPA – S.968 – PROTECT IP Act of 2011

“A bill to prevent online threats to economic creativity and theft of intellectual property, and for other purposes.”

While the message seems legit, the bigger issue is freedom of expression, a right guaranteed by the First Amendment. If they allow censorship on the major social networks, of course they will go further.

Take Action!

My issues:
Considering part of my net addiction is to fan made tv/music videos on You Tube (for entertainment!), i have known loss for the great vids. I don’t have an account but i have links and i hate having to rearrange/delete or find a (un)suitable substitutes to those links. The creativity of putting your own spin on a ‘ship or a scene, set to music, i find inspirational. It’s like a musical editorial. Some of the disappearances are by the user and some have been WMG or other corporate copyright issues. I don’t know the back story or what else has been flagged for the censorship, but i do get pissed at this.

Fair Use:
Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for ”fair use” for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship and research. Fair use is permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational, or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use.
